Eight Swimmers Competing at Arena Grand Prix in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Eight members from The University of Akron swimming and diving team are competing in the Arena Grand Prix, which takes place from May 15-18 in the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center.
The Arena Grand Prix at Charlotte is the fifth stop of USA Swimming's 2013-14 Arena Grand Prix Series, which provides the nation's best swimmers six opportunities to face top-flight competition in the United States. Kelsey Ferrante, Taylor Hart, Amanda Lawson, Ashley Niznik, Hannah Raspopovich, Laura Savariau, Erin Seiler, and Alisa Tsypin will be the competing members from the Zips team.
The Grand Prix features some of the most talented swimmers in the world, including Olympic gold medalists Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte and Allison Schmitt.
Male and female overall Arena Grand Prix Series champions will be honored at the conclusion of the 2013-14 series based on the number of points accumulated throughout the six meets. Participants will be awarded points in each individual Olympic event throughout the duration of the Series (Five points for first, three for second, one point for third place).
Finals are set for 6 PM on May 16-18. Live results can be found here for each day of the competition.
From Friday's Events
- Lawson earned eighth in the consolation final, 16 overall, in the 100 breaststroke at a time of 1:12.55. Her time during the event was 0:00.36 off of the 2012 Olympic Trial Cut time of 1:12.19.
- Ferrante placed 28th overall in the 50 backstroke (30.65).
- Seiler ended the 100 butterfly at a time of 1:02.91, good for 22nd in the race.
- Raspopovich notched a ninth-place finish in the 50 breaststroke at a time of 32.56. Her time was first in the consolation final.
- Hart, Raspopovich and Savariau competed in the 400 freestyle relay, and turned in a third place overall finish at 3:57.48. Ferrante, Niznik, Seiler and Tsypin also competed in the event, finishing seventh at 4:04.49.
