Baseball Drops Series Finale to Northern Illinois, 2-0

DEKALB, Ill. – The University of Akron (24-25, 11-13 MAC) baseball team dropped the finale of the three-game Mid-American Conference series to Northern Illinois University (17-33, 11-13 MAC) by a final score of 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Ralph McKinzie Field.
Junior Pat Dyer made the start for Akron, and worked 8.0 innings with three hits, two earned runs and four strikeouts. The southpaw's record fell to 3-4 with Sunday's loss.
Northern Illinois scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first after a RBI double to left-center by Brian Sisler. Dyer set down the following two Huskies to end the frame.
The Zips' Dyer and Huskies' Alex Klonowski entered into a heated pitcher's duel following the NIU one-run first inning. Both Akron and Northern Illinois went scoreless from the second to the seventh inning, until NIU added one run in the bottom of the eighth.
Dyer allowed a RBI single to Johnny Zubek in the eighth, making it a 2-0 Huskies lead. Akron and NIU went scoreless in the ninth inning to finish off the game.
NIU's Klonowski had a complete game shutout with seven strikeouts and two hits allowed. Sophomore Kris Simonton and freshman James Meeker III had one hit apiece for Akron.
The Zips have four games left in the regular season slate, beginning with a midweek game on Tuesday at Lee R. Jackson Field against Dayton. Akron will round out the regular season MAC schedule with a three-game series vs. Kent State set to commence on Thursday, May 15 at Canal Park for the Diamond Classic.
