Baseball Slated for Two Midweek Games

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron baseball team is set for two midweek games at Canal Park both at 6 p.m., this coming week, beginning on Tuesday against Youngstown State. A Wednesday matchup with Wright State will cap off the midweek action.

Last weekend…
Akron lost all three games in the weekend series with Mid-American Conference opponent Bowling Green State University, which dropped the Zips season record to 20-17 and 9-6 within the MAC.
The Zips lost the opening game, 9-7, despite registering 13 base hits, seven RBI and five walks. Matt Rembielak and Billy Salem tied for the team lead in base hits with three apiece, while Danny Lawrence and Rembielak led the mob with two RBI each. James Meeker III also had a multi-hit game, producing one run scored.
Akron fell in game two by a score of 11-5 on Saturday. James Sheltrown went 2-for-3 with two walks, while Brian Lees had two runs, two hits, one RBI and a walk. Six different Akron batters recorded hits in the loss. Devan Ahart registered his team-leading 19th stolen base.
UA finalized the series with an 8-1 loss to BGSU. Kris Simonton and Billy Salem led the mob with two hits apiece. Grant Alvarez and Lees each had one hit, with Lees scoring the Zips lone run of the afternoon.
Probable pitchers…
Joe Cochran will be making his second start and his 11th overall appearance of the season. He comes into Tuesday's contest with a 5.40 ERA over 21.2 innings pitched and 15 strikeouts. He last pitched on Saturday against Bowling Green, turning in one inning with two runs allowed and a strikeout.
Michael Steensen is scheduled for his seventh start of the season on Wednesday against Youngstown State. He last started on April 8 at Pittsburgh, and tossed 4.0 innings with four runs and three walks allowed. Steensen has a record of 0-3 heading into the week.
Scouting YSU…
The Penguins come into the week with a record of 8-24. YSU bats a collective .254, led by Alex Larivee at .340 with 13 runs, five extra-base hits and nine RBI. Youngstown State's scheduled starter is Jeremy Quinlan, who comes into the game at an 8.03 ERA over 12.1 innings.
Akron holds an all-time record of 95-62 against YSU. The Zips won the last matchup in 2013 by a score of 5-4.
Scouting Wright State...
The Raiders are 21-16 overall and 15-2 within the Horizon League. Wright State recently swept the University of Illinois at Chicago this past week by scores of 11-5, 4-1 and 9-7. The team owns a .268 batting average, which includes a lineup with four batting averages above .300. Michael Timm leads the Raiders with a .333 batting average, 10 doubles, three home runs, and 24 RBI. Wright State's pitching staff has a collective 4.09 ERA and has held opponents to a .255 batting average this season.
