WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Akron continued to roll on the second day of the Rebel Spring Games, shutting out Temple 8-0 in six innings, and holding on for a gutsy 8-7 victory over Manhattan.
The Zips (7-2) wrap up competition for the weekend on Sunday when they take on Bucknell at 10 a.m. and Saint Peter's at 12 p.m.
Game One: Akron 8, Temple 0 (6)
Jessica Schneider went 2-for-2 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored to propel the Akron offense in a six-inning victory over Temple.
Schneider blasted a two-run home run in the top of the first to set the tone for the Zips who never looked back. Kellie Roudabush scored three of Akron's eight runs on a 1-for-2 performance at the plate with a walk and a stolen base.
Erin Seiler went the distance in the circle, allowing just three hits and one walk to move to 3-0 on the season.
Akron scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning after MacKenzie Conrad set up runners on second and third with a sacrifice. Chelsea Wildey stepped in to issue a sac fly to left field, driving in Roudabush and moving Schneider over to third. Schneider would swipe home to put the Zips up by four.
UA put the finishing touches on in the sixth, bringing in runs on a walk, a wild pitch and a ground out.
Game Two: Akron 8, Manhattan 7
Trailing 4-0, Akron put together a pair of four-run innings and was able to hang on down the stretch to take down Manhattan, 8-7.
Roudabush went 3-for-4 and scored two runs, and Jessica Reiman posted three RBI on two hits to pace UA's offense.
Sara Pearson (2-0) picked up the victory, throwing 2.1 innings in relief after Mackenzie Conrad started the game. Seiler was credited with her first save of the year, coming in midway through the fifth inning to finish the job. She struck out three of the nine batters she faced.
Manhattan jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after two innings of play, taking advantage of a pair of Akron errors, but the Zips answered in the third. UA sent 10 batters to the plate and scored three of its four runs on RBI singles – one each from Erin Pond, Wildey and Reiman.
After retiring the side in the bottom of the third, Akron came back with another four runs in the fourth. Wildey ripped an RBI double and Reiman drove in two runs with a double of her own, all with two outs, to highlight another big inning for the Zips.
Manhattan made it a one-run game, scoring three in the fifth inning, but Seiler closed the book on the Jaspers in the bottom of the seventh to prevent a rally.
