AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips will make their first appearance in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) when they travel to Fort Wayne, Ind., on Wednesday, March 19, to face the IPFW Mastodons at 7 p.m. ET.
The Zips (21-12) will play in the postseason for the seventh-straight season and the eighth time in Keith Dambrot's 10 seasons as head coach of his alma mater. Akron participated in the NCAA Tournament in 2009, 2011 and 2013, the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in 2006, 2008 and 2012, and the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) in 2010.
"We appreciate the CIT selection committee giving us the opportunity to continue our season," Dambrot said. "We are ready to move forward and compete for a postseason championship."
This will be the first meeting between the Zips and the Mastodons. IPFW (24-10) finished tied for second place in the regular season in the Summit League. The Mastodons fell 60-57 to North Dakota State in the Summit League title game on March 11.
The Zips return to action after falling 64-60 in overtime to eventual Mid-American Conference tournament champion Western Michigan on March 14 in the MAC tournament semifinals.
Zips fans wishing to attend the contest can purchase tickets for the game beginning Monday, March 17, at noon ET through the IPFW ticket office. Tickets can be purchased online at gomastodons.com, by visiting the Gates Athletic Center Ticket Office or by phone at (260) 481-6555. Tickets will start at $10 each and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, created in January of 2009, features 32 teams from non-BCS programs not participating in the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship or the National Invitation Tournament.
The tournament is single elimination and consists of six rounds, all being played at on-campus sites which are determined by seeding. In an effort to minimize travel and limit classes missed, the CIT uses the old NIT model, with future opponents determined by results of the previous round.
CBS SPORTS NETWORK will air the semifinals and championship games of the 2014 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
