AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron Department of Athletics will honor UA President Luis M. Proenza by giving away 2,000 limited-edition bobbleheads of his likeness at the men's basketball game vs. Buffalo on March 4.
Proenza, who will complete his presidency at the end of June following more than 15 years of service, will be honored with the Kenneth "Red" Cochrane Meritorious Service Award at the 39th Annual Varsity "A" Association Sports Hall of Fame banquet on Feb. 28.
"Throughout his time as our President, Dr. Proenza has ensured that the University provides our student-athletes and coaches with first-class facilities and other resources necessary to compete for championships," Director of Athletics Tom Wistrcill said. "We thought that a commemorative bobblehead of 'Dr. P' would be a fun way for Zips Athletics to celebrate the legacy of a man, who, for the last 15 years, has been our No. 1 fan."
Season ticket holders will receive one voucher per account in the mail prior to the Buffalo contest to redeem for a bobblehead. The remaining bobbleheads will be given away at the game against the Bulls via instant win scratch-off cards.
Akron will play five of its final seven Mid-American Conference games at home and fans can still purchase three-game MAC mini-plans. Each mini plan includes a ticket to either the Ohio game on Feb. 22 or the Kent State game on March 7 or 8, tickets to two additional home games and a replica Zips home jersey for just $35. Visit BackTheZips.com for ticket and promotion information.
The Zips return home to conclude cross-divisional play on Saturday, Feb. 15, when they play host to Northern Illinois. Tip off at James A. Rhodes Arena is set for 7 p.m. ET.
