AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron junior golfer Louis Birchall has been named Mid-American Conference Men's Golfer of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday.
The honor is the first by a Zip this year and the second for Birchall. He was also named MAC Golfer of the Week on Feb. 21, 2013.
Over the weekend, Birchall led the Zips to a fifth-place finish at The Firestone Invitational with one of his best performances of his collegiate career. He finished the event alone in second place with a three-round score of 213 (-3).
Birchall posted a career-best round of 7-under 65 – an effort consisting of seven birdies, 11 pars and no bogeys – to climb 51 spots into a tie for second place with a 36-hole tally of 141 (-3) on Monday after opening play with a 4-over 76. He is just the third Akron golfer to post a round of 65 or better in program history.
Heading into the final round, Birchall sat just one shot off the lead. After a slow start to the day, he came roaring back to challenge for the individual title.
Trailing by two shots entering the final two holes, Birchall closed the round birdie-birdie to finish in second place. His chip-in birdie on 18 gave him a share of the lead for a brief moment, before his playing partner sank his birdie put on 18 to win the event out-right.
The Zips will have a quick turnaround, heading to Noblesville, Ind., for the Fall Preview at Sagamore on Oct. 13.
