AKRON, Ohio – Louis Birchall posted the lowest round of the tournament on day one as the Akron Zips men's golf team ended round two in a tie for second place after day one of The Firestone Invitational, Presented by FirstEnergy Solutions, on Monday.
Birchall posted a round of 7-under 65 – an effort with seven birdies, 11 pars and no bogeys – to climb 51 spots into a tie for second place with a 36-hole tally of 141 (-3). He will open the final round on Tuesday just one shot off the lead.
As a team, the Zips posted rounds of 297 (+9) and 285 (-3) to end the day with a two-round tally of 582 (+6). Akron is tied with South Carolina-Aiken, with both teams trailing Xavier by five strokes (577, +1).
J.B. Williams sits just outside the top five in a tie for sixth place after closing the day at even par (144). He opened play with a 2-under 70 before carding a 2-over 74 in the afternoon.
Ryan Harris posted rounds of 75 (+3) and 73 (+1) on the day, good for a tie for 28th place (148, +4), while George Baylis is tied for 48th place (151, +7) after recording scores of 78 (+5) and 73 (+1).
Yann Pfeiffer rounded out the scoring-five in a tie for 68th place (155, +11). He carded rounds of 76 (+4) and 79 (+7).
Three Zips are competing in the tournament as individuals, led by Harry Whittle. He ended day one in a tie for 55th place (152, +8) after posting rounds of 78 (+6) and 74 (+2). Zach Gollwitzer (153, +9) and Chandler Morgan (156, +12) are tied for 59th and tied for 75th, respectively.
Play will conclude on Tuesday, with tee times set to begin at 8:21 a.m. ET from the first and tenth tees. The Zips will begin their round at 10 a.m. from the first tee.
