Men's Soccer Shuts Out Michigan, 3-0

AKRON, Ohio —Akron men's soccer shut out Michigan, 3-0, on a rainy Tuesday night at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field. The shutout was the Zips' fifth of the year.
The Zips improved to 7-4-1 overall, while the Wolverines fell to 4-6-2 overall. The victory snapped UM's three-game win streak.
"We needed the win," said Akron head coach Jared Embick. "We have a lot of guys who can step up and score."
Freshman forward Stuart Holthusen (Auckland, New Zealand) put the Zips on the scoreboard early after senior forward Saad Abdul-Salaam (Gahanna, Ohio) fed him the ball from the left wing in the sixth minute.
"Scoring at home, there's nothing like it," Holthusen said. "I'm overjoyed."
Sophomore midfielder Adam Najem (Clifton, N.J.) added a penalty kick to put UA up 2-0 in the 15th minute.
The Wolverines had opportunities to score with five corner kicks in the first half.
In the 23rd minute, freshman forward Richie Laryea (Toronto, Ont.) almost made it 3-0 with a huge shot, but it was stopped by UM goalie Evan Louro.
In the 43rd minute, Abdul-Salaam headed a corner kick into the net, but it was stopped by Louro.
The Zips led, 2-0, at intermission.
In the 51st minute, junior forward Sean Sepe (West Islip, N.Y.) had a shot off of cross that bounced off a defender, but it was blocked by a Wolverine defender.
Most of the second half was played in a downpour.
In the 79th minute, Michigan had its first corner kick of the half but could not convert.
With less than two minutes to go, freshman forward Anthony Macchione (Camas, Wash.) scored the first goal of his career to cap the shutout.
Overall, both teams had 12 shots. The Zips had seven shots on goal, compared to UM's two. Both teams had six corner kicks
Junior goalkeeper Jake Fenlason (San Diego, Calif.) recorded two saves in his 90 minutes of action.
