AKRON, Ohio – Junior men's golfer Louis Birchall was named the Zips' Student-Athlete of the Week on Oct. 13.
The honor was the second in the last week for Birchall as he was named the Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week on Oct. 8.
During last week's Firestone Invitational (Oct. 6-7), Birchall led the Zips to a fifth-place finish with one of his best performances of his collegiate career. He finished the event alone in second place with a three-round score of 213 (-3).
Birchall posted a career-best round of 7-under 65 – an effort consisting of seven birdies, 11 pars and no bogeys – to climb 51 spots into a tie for second place with a 36-hole tally of 141 (-3) on Monday after opening play with a 4-over 76. He was just the third Akron golfer to post a round of 65 or better in program history.
Heading into the final round, Birchall sat just one shot off the lead. After a slow start to the day, he came roaring back to challenge for the individual title.
Trailing by two shots entering the final two holes, Birchall closed the round birdie-birdie to finish in second place. His chip-in birdie on 18 gave him a share of the lead for a brief moment, before his playing partner sank his birdie put on 18 to win the event out-right.
