Tennis Improves to 4-0 with Wins Over Dayton and Wright State

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team posted two road victories on Saturday, downing Dayton 6-1 in the afternoon and Wright State 4-1 at night.
The Zips (4-0) swept doubles and won at Nos. 1, 2 and 4 through 6 singles versus Dayton (0-1), then were victorious in the first two flights of doubles and at Nos. 1, 4, and 5 singles against Wright State (0-1) in a contest that was called when the Zips clinched match point.
"We had great effort today in both matches," UA head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Playing hurt and tired from four matches in three days, I am happy with how we did overall."
The Zips' No. 1 doubles team of Olga Shkundina and Ksenia Berestetska earned a 6-1 win over Dayton's Alex Townsend and Mandy Merchant, and a 6-2 decision against Wright State's Linsey Verstrepen and Elaine Cloern. UA's duo of Martina Zerbola and Madison Cohen posted a pair of wins at No. 2 doubles, topping UD's Carly Peck and Sammy Hornberger 6-3 and WSU's Aby Madrigal and Vanessa Madrigal by the same count.
Shkundina and Berestetska took both their singles contests as well. Shkundina used identical 6-2, 6-2 scores at No. 1 to top both Townsend and Verstrepen, while Berestetska defeated Merchant 6-1, 6-2 and WSU's Tori Turner 6-3, 6-0, both at the fourth flight.
Today's doubleheader closed out a season-opening road trip for UA that started on Thursday with a 7-0 win at Robert Morris and continued on Friday with a 4-3 victory at West Virginia.
The Zips travel to Cleveland State on Jan. 25 for a 6 p.m. ET contest.
Zips Notebook: Akron swept Dayton and Wright State in a same-day road doubleheader last season as well ... the Zips topped Wright State for the fourth-straight time and improved their all-time record versus the Raiders to 21-6 ... UA defeated Dayton for the second-straight meeting and moved closer to evening the all-time series record versus the Flyers, closing to within 7-6 ... after sitting out the season opener at Robert Morris on Thursday, Olga Shkundina has won at No. 1 singles in three-straight matches ... Ksenia Berestetska is 4-0 in singles play (2-0 at No. 4, 1-0 at Nos. 3 and 5).
