MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The University of Akron men's golf team came out on fire, with all five players shooting 73 or better, to finish day one of the Golfweek Program Challenge in a tie for third place on Sunday at the par-72, 6,940-yard layout at True Blue Golf Club.
The Zips had plenty of good scores to count as two players, J.B. Williams and Charlie Bull, fired under-par rounds. UA finished the day with a 3-under 285 and are tied with IUPUI. James Madison will sleep with the lead tonight (280, -8) while Northern Iowa sits in second, just one shot ahead of the Zips (284, -4).
Williams, playing in his first collegiate event, sits in fifth place after firing a round of 4-under 68. Bull closed the afternoon with an 1-under 71 and is tied for 14th place.
Carr Vernon, Louis Birchall and Zach Gollwitzer made scoring easy for the Zips, posting rounds of 1-over 73 and sit in a group tied for 18th place.
The Zips will look to put themselves in position to contend for the team title on Monday when they tee off at 8:15 a.m. ET from the first tee. Fans can follow all three rounds via Golfstat Live Scoring.
The men's squad is joined by the women's squad at the Golfweek Program Challenge, which awards a men's and women's team champion, as well as a program team champion (combined men's and women's scores from each program). This is the first appearance for Akron in the event.
