NASHPORT, Ohio – The University of Akron men's golf team sits in fourth place, led by three Zips in the top-20, following the first day of the 2013 Mid-American Conference Championship at the par-72, 7,243-yard Longaberger Golf Club.
The Zips opened the day with a round of 19-over 307, but shaved seven strokes in the afternoon to post a second-round 300 (+12) to close day one with a 36-hole total of 607 (+31). Kent State leads the field with a score of 591 (+15).
The trio of Charlie Bull, Carr Vernon and Louis Birchall led the way for Akron as all three players sit inside the top-20. Bull and Vernon led the way, finishing play inside the top-10. Bull posted rounds of 76 and 72 and will enter round three in a tie for sixth place (148, +4). Vernon played a pair of consistent rounds, carding 2-over 74 and a 3-over 75 to finish in a tie for ninth place (149, +5).
Birchall is four strokes back of Vernon in a tie for 16th place with a 36-hole tally of 153 (+9). He opened his first MAC Championship with a round of 8-over 80, but came roaring back with a superb round of 1-over 73 in the afternoon.
Ryan Harris is tied for 32nd place (157, +13) after posting rounds of 77 (+5) and 80 (+8), while Cameron Simmons is 41st (167, +23) after two rounds. Simmons posted scores of 82 (+10) and 85 (+13).
Saturday's round will see threesomes teeing off from the first tee starting at 7:50 a.m. ET. Akron will open the round with tee times beginning at 8:40 a.m. The event is free to the public and fans can follow the scoring live via Golfstat Live Scoring.
