WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Junior Charlie Bull is one shot off the lead as The University of Akron men's golf team sits in ninth place after 36 holes at the Boilermaker Invitational on the par-72, 7,465-yard Kempen Course.
Bull, who earned his first-collegiate win earlier this season at the WKU Kenny Perry Invitational (Oct. 14-16), put together back-to-back rounds under par to finish in a tie for second place (141, -3). Bull fired rounds of 2-under 70 and 1-under 71, and trails Iowa's Joseph Winslow by a single stroke (140, -4).
As a team, the Zips put together two of their better rounds of the spring, posting scores on 11-over 299 and 9-over 297 to close the day with a total of 20-over 596. Akron is seven shots outside the top-five.
Iowa leads the field, which includes eight Golfstat Top-100 teams, by six strokes (577, +1).
Cameron Simmons fired the second-lowest round of the day to close play in a tie for 14th place (145, +1). His round of 3-under 69 in round two was just one stroke off his career-low round of 68. He opened the day with a round of 4-over 76.
Carr Vernon rebounded nicely from a first-round 81 (+9) to post a score of 2-over 74 in round two to finish the day tied for 52nd place (155, +11) while Ryan Harris sits in a tie for 66th place (157, +13). Harris posted rounds of 76 (+4) and 81 (+9).
Louis Birchall rounded out the scoring-five tied for 73rd place with a 36-hole total of 158 (+14). He fired identical rounds of 7-over 79.
Bull looks to become just the third Zips' golfer in program history to post two individual victories in the same season and the first since Blake Sattler earned two individual medalist honors in 2006-07. Greg Boyette also won two tournaments during the 1995-96 campaign.
The third and final round will begin at 8:45 a.m. on Sunday. Live scoring for the event will be available through Golfstat Live Scoring.
