Baseball Drops Midweek Matchup to Xavier, 11-3

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron (8-25) baseball team dropped the midweek matchup on Wednesday against Xavier University (20-15) by a score of 11-3 at Canal Park.
Sophomore Jon Pusateri made the start at pitcher for the Zips, and turned in 2.2 innings pitched with four earned runs. Pusateri's record fell to 1-7 on the season with the loss.
Akron was put in an early 2-0 hole after Xavier plated one run in the first and second inning. UA was able to knot the game at two with RBI singles from Jared Turocy and Brady Stewart in the bottom of the second inning.
Xavier started to pull away in the third inning, as the Musketeers plated five runs in the inning. Akron rebounded for one more run in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single to left field by Joey Havrilak, plating Devan Ahart on the play.
The Musketeers went on to score four more runs in the fourth inning, to put the game out of reach at the final score of 11-3.
Five Akron bullpen pitchers registered scoreless appearances in the loss to Xavier. Zach Beaver, Andrew Fanning, Joe Cochran, Daulton Mosbarger and Samuel Trecaso each registered scoreless innings on Wednesday.
The bullpen totaled 6.1 innings pitched with one earned run allowed and eight strikeouts. Beaver spent the most time on the mound at 1.1 innings pitched.
Overall, the Akron offense registered six base hits, two walks and one stolen base. Matt LaRocca led the squad in hits with two, which included two doubles. Ahart registered the lone steal for the Zips, pushing his season total to nine.
Akron baseball will travel to Bowling Green State University for a three game Mid-American Conference series. The series opener is set for 3 p.m., on Friday.
