BOSTON – The awards continue to roll in for senior Zeke Marshall as the center was named one of 21 members of the 2013 Lefty Driesell Defensive All-America team, CollegeInsider.com announced on Monday.
Marshall, a two-time Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year, is now a finalist for the 2013 Lefty Driesell Award, which will be presented on April 5 to the nation's top defensive player.
Marshall, who was named to the 2012-13 Lou Henson All-America and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I All-District teams last week, finished his Akron career as the school and Mid-American Conference career blocked shots leader with 368 rejections for his career.
During the season, Marshall blocked 122 shots and averaged 3.7 blocked shots per game, which ranks third in the nation. He averaged more blocked shots per game than 212 Division I teams.
Last month, Marshall earned his second-straight MAC Defensive Player of the Year award, just the second student-athlete to do so in league history. He was a First-Team All-MAC selection this season, as well as a MAC All-Tournament team honoree.
Marshall became just the fourth player in the last 30 seasons to average at least 13.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.5 blocked shots per game while shooting at least 65.0 percent in a season, joining Bo Outlaw (Houston, 1992-93), Patrick Ewing (Georgetown, 1983-84) and Hakeem Olajuwon (Houston, 1983-84). Marshall averaged 13.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.7 blocked shots per game while posting a 65.1 shooting percentage.
In 138 career games, which ranks third all-time at Akron, he ranks 17th in points scored (1,265) and led the Zips to 95 victories, third-most by a senior class in program history (112 seasons). He helped guide the Zips to four MAC Championship games, two MAC tournament titles, two MAC regular season titles, two NCAA Tournaments, one NIT and one CBI appearance.
Marshall is also a finalist for The Lou Henson Award, which is presented annually to the top mid-major player in Division I college basketbal
The Lefty Driesell award is named in honor of coaching legend Lefty Driesell, who is the only person to ever win 100 games at four different Division I schools. He is best known for his time at Maryland, leading the program to the National Invitational Tournament title in 1972 and its second-ever ACC Tournament Championship in 1984. He finished his career at Maryland with a 348-159 record and concluded his career with an impressive 786-394 mark.
