FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The lone Zips competitor on the day, sophomore Alex McCune represented The University of Akron track and field team well with a 10th place finish in the men's heptathlon Saturday at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
McCune, who started the day in 14th place after the first four events, improved his position four spots while recording the second-best heptathlon point total in school history with 5,568. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native set the Zips' all-time standard at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships last month with 5,583 points in a championship performance.
McCune opened with a time of 8.27 in the 60-meter hurdles. He then jumped into 10th place with a big solid mark in perhaps his best event with a jump of 16-04.75 in the pole vault. McCune finished the competition with a time of 2:51.00 in the 1,000-meters – the seventh and final leg of the grueling heptathlon – to maintain his position.
With 6,175 points, Arkansas' Kevin Lazas held off Wisconsin's Japheth Cato, who tallied 6,165, to take the event by a mere 10 points, which represented the slimmest winning margin in NCAA Indoor history.
The competition officially concludes another successful indoor campaign for the Zips track and field team, which sent a program-high six competitors to the NCAA Indoor Championships. Furthermore, the future remains bright for UA as the Zips will return all but one – senior Joe Wesley – next season.
Before that happens, Akron will have a week off from competition to prepare for the start of its outdoor season. The Zips will kick off the campaign at the LSU Relays in Baton Rouge, La., from March 22-23.
