Baseball Falters in Second Game Against USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of Akron (0-11) baseball team dropped the second game of the three game series against USC Upstate (10-3) by a score of 8-2 on Saturday afternoon at Harley Park.
Freshman John Valek III had the start at pitcher for Akron, and turned in a 4.1 inning performance. Valek allowed five earned funs on eight hits with one walk allowed. The southpaw from Parkland, Fla., now owns a record of 0-3.
Akron was able to take advantage of a bases loaded, no out situation in the first inning. Matt LaRocca's sac fly and Brady Stewart's RBI single gave the Zips a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first inning.
Tyler Begun and Matt Rembielak were the run scorers in the first inning. Begun finished with one run scored, one walk and one hit, while Rembielak ended the day with one run and one walk.
Anthony Bova earned his second start of the season, and played left field. Bova had two walks and a stolen base in the loss. The Akron offense totaled six base hits and six walks on the day. The six walks are the most by the offense in a single game this season.
Gerrad Rohan collected a pair of base hits this afternoon. Rohan has tallied three, two-hit game so far this season, the first against Louisville (02/23) and the second against Kentucky (03/03).
Other players recording base hits in Saturday's game were Joey Havrilak and Devan Ahart. Ahart leads the Akron squad in hits (12), batting average (.300), OBP (.356) and stolen bases (2).
Akron and USC Upstate will wrap up the three game series on Sunday at 1 p.m., in Harley Park. Jon Pusateri is the scheduled starting pitcher for Akron. Links to live stats and a video stream can be found on the Akron schedule page.
