MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The University of Akron (1-14) baseball team lost on Friday afternoon to Quinnipiac University (5-4) by a score of 4-1 in the Chanticleer Classic hosted by Coastal Carolina University at TicketReturn.com Field.
Akron starting pitcher – freshman JT Brubaker – took the loss on Friday, which drops his record this season to 0-5. Brubaker tossed an efficient 4.2 innings pitched with one earned run allowed and three strikeouts.
"JT is learning how to put hitters away, but needs to be more consistent," Head Coach Rick Rembielak said Friday. "That will come with experience."
Right fielder Daulton Mosbarger delivered an RBI single in the second inning to give UA a 1-0 lead. Brady Stewart scored the run in the play, and went on to finish the game with two walks, a hit and a run scored. Akron would not see a lead over Quinnipiac following the second inning.
"Offensively, we were too silent. One run won't cut it unless we pitch a shutout," Rembielak said. "We're not carrying over enough good performances from day to day to build off."
Devan Ahart totaled the most hits on the day for Akron with two hits, hitting out of the three-hole in the lineup. Ahart now leads the Akron squad in hits with 16 this season.
Junior Bryan White contributed a base knock in a start at first base for the Zips. White's hit on Friday was his first of the 2013 season.
The bullpen performed well following the exit of starting pitcher Brubaker. Zach Beaver, Andrew Fanning and Matt LaRocca combined for 3.1 innings pitched with two runs allowed - one earned - and two strikeouts. Fanning logged the most innings pitched out of the bullpen with 1.2 innings.
Akron and Quinnipiac will play again on Saturday in the Chanticleer Classic with an 11 a.m. scheduled first pitch. A link to live stats is available on the Akron baseball schedule page.
