AKRON, Ohio – Robbie Derschang, a senior on The University of Akron men's soccer team, received national and league praise Monday following his two-goal effort at Michigan.
Derschang, who bagged his first brace in an Akron uniform, was named to the National Team of the Week by College Soccer News as well as Mid-American Conference Player of the Week by the league office.
The Colorado native willed the Zips (12-3-1) to a 2-1 win in Ann Arbor last Wednesday night, setting a Zips' career high with eight shots and five shots on goal.
Derschang, who transferred from SMU in 2012, scored both goals in the first 36 minutes of the match. He finished a combination play that started with a cross from Saad Abdul-Salaam and a one-touch pass from Matt Foldesy in the 15th minute to give UA a 1-0 lead. The Zips then took a 2-0 advantage in the 36th minute on his unassisted score.
In all, it was the second two-goal effort of the senior's collegiate career. Derschang also scored two goals in a match against Bradley as a freshman at SMU in 2010.
Since moving from left back to forward prior to Akron's 2-1 win against Northern Illinois on Oct. 26, Derschang has scored three goals in two matches and has netted the game-winning goal in each game.
In a match-up that will likely feature two of the NCAA's best teams, Akron will host Penn State at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field Wednesday night at 7 p.m. ET.
