AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron had an up and down day, but finished strong to post a sixth-place showing on the final day of The Firestone Invitational, Presented by FirstEnergy Solutions, at the par-72, 7,125-yard Firestone Country Club North Course.
Sitting as high as 11-over on the front-nine, the Zips mounted a furious comeback to post a round of 2-over 290 to close play with a three-round tally of 880 (+16). South Carolina-Aiken (871, +7) used a round of 6-under 282 on Tuesday to leapfrog day-one leader Washington State (873, +9) to grab a two-stroke victory.
The Zips were led by sophomore Carr Vernon, who finished alone in second place with a three-round score of 6-under 210. Vernon, who closed with a round of 4-under 68 – tied for the lowest of his college career – was tied for the lead in the clubhouse before Eastern Michigan's Stuart Grehan went eagle-par-birdie over the final three holes to win by three strokes (207, -9).
Senior Charlie Bull had a tough start to the round, going 6-over through the first six holes but would close the final 12 holes 6-under to post a round of 72 (E). He finished tied for sixth place (215, -1).
Sophomore Ryan Harris, playing as an individual, also posted a top-10 finish, ending the week tied for eighth place with a tally of 216 (E). He carded a round of 1-over 73 on Tuesday.
Freshman J.B. Williams posted his second-straight round of 73 (+1) to finish tied for 57th place (227, +11) while fellow freshman Zach Gollwitzer ended play tied for 61st (228, +12) following a final-round 77 (+5).
Freshman Chandler Morgan and junior Harry Whittle, both playing as individuals, finished tied for 70th (231, +15) and tied for 82nd (237, +21) respectively. Morgan posted his best round of the week on Tuesday (75, +3) while Whittle ended the invitational with a round of 81 (+9).
The Zips were without sophomore Louis Birchall, who hurt his wrist during Monday's first round and was forced to withdraw.
Akron returns to action on October 21 when the squad travels to Kennesaw, Ga., for the Pinetree Intercollegiate.
