AKRON, Ohio – Following a slow start to the morning round, The University of Akron men's golf team climbed six spots – thanks to the best team round of the day – to close day one of The Firestone Invitational, Presented by FirstEnergy Solutions in fifth place at the par-72, 7,125-yard Firestone Country Club North Course.
The Zips posted a round of even-par 288 in the afternoon to move into the top five with a 36-hole score of 590 (+14). Akron is ten shots behind tournament-leader Washington State (580, +4) and just two shots back of second-place Kansas State (588, +12).
Leading the way for Akron was sophomore Carr Vernon and senior Charlie Bull. Vernon's back-to-back rounds of 71 (-1) put him in a tie for fourth place (142, -2) while Bull is tied for sixth place (143, -1) following rounds of 74 (+2) and 69 (-3). Vernon is two shots back of the individual lead while Bull is three shots out with one round to play.
Sophomore Ryan Harris, playing as an individual, is also tied for sixth place (143, -1) after rounds of 71 (-1) and 72 (E).
Freshman Zach Gollwitzer is tied for 42nd place (151, +7) following rounds of 76 (+4) and 75 (+3). Freshman J.B. Williams had the turnaround of the day, posting a round of 1-over 73 in the afternoon after a first-round 81 (+9). He is tied for 63rd place (154, +10).
Freshman Chandler Morgan and junior Harry Whittle, both playing as individuals, are tied for 71st place (156, +12). Morgan posted rounds of 80 (+8) and 76 (+4) while Whittle carded scores of 79 (+7) and 77 (+5).
Sophomore Louis Birchall was forced to withdraw from the event after injuring his wrist during the first round.
Play is set to conclude on Tuesday with tee times from the No. 1 and No. 10 tees beginning at 8:30 a.m. ET.
