AKRON, Ohio – Reinaldo Brenes, a senior forward from the No. 17 University of Akron men's soccer team, has been named to the Academic All-District Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced Thursday.
Brenes, who shares the team lead in goals scored with four, carries a cumulative GPA of 3.74 as an International Business major at UA.
To be nominated for the Academic All-District Team, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average, participate in at least 50 percent of their team's games and be of at least sophomore athletic eligibility. By being named to the All-District Team, Brenes is eligible for 2013 Academic All-American status.
Following a breakout season in 2012, Brenes, who was named one of three team captains for the 2013 campaign, continues to be one of the best finishers in all of college soccer. In fact, all four of his goals this season have been game winners as the native of Costa Rica delivered the decisive strikes at Furman (1-0), at Rutgers (2-1), against Bowling Green (1-0) and at West Virginia (1-0).
After posting a 2-1 win at Michigan Wednesday night, Akron (12-3-1), which is unbeaten in its last six games, will return home for another key match-up with a Big Ten school as No. 9 Penn State comes to FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field on Wednesday, Nov. 6. The Zips and Nittany Lions will kick off at 7 p.m. ET.
