AKRON, Ohio – Registration is open for The University of Akron men's soccer program's Winter/Spring 2014 Camps. One of the program's most popular camps, Monday Night Soccer School starts Feb. 10 and continues each Monday night for the next six weeks.
Over the course of a 90-minute game, with all of its ebbs and flows, the difference between winning and losing at every level comes down to a few moments. Can field players take advantage of scoring opportunities? Can goalkeepers make the one or two saves they have to make to keep their team in the game?
With this in mind, the Akron Soccer School was created. Once a week, all fall long, the UA Staff will give each student the technical and tactical information needed to be a difference maker. Whether you are just getting started or are already an All-American, the Akron Soccer School can take your game to a whole new level.
Registration is open to boys and girls, ages 10-18. To reserve your spot for this popular camp, log on to AkronSoccerCamp.com.
College Prep Camp Spots Limited
Akron's College Prep Camp, which runs from January 24-26, is filling up quickly and boys ages 14 and up who are interested are strongly encouraged to pre-register at AkronSoccerCamp.com.
The prep camp, which features the coaching staff from the Zips as well as other top coaches from across the country, is in its eighth year of existence. The three-day event is designed for advanced player development and exposure to some of the nation's top college coaches. In addition to college coaches, several Zips players will be employed by the camp for demonstration purposes.
The staff at Akron believes that "the game is the best teacher." The same philosophy will be applied at camp. The focus of all activities will be learning through play. Enrollment in the camp is extremely limited to allow individual attention for each player from the staff of college coaches. A combination of small sided and 11v11 games is the core of the camp curriculum.
Goalkeeping
Akron Soccer Goalkeeping Camp, which runs from March 14-15, focuses on the technical and tactical skills needed to succeed in one of the most demanding and unique positions in all of team sports. Sessions for the weekend will be conducted by the University of Akron Goalkeeping Coach Stuart Dobson. Coach Dobson will be assisted by current and former Zips goalkeepers as well as other collegiate level goalkeeping coaches. Visit AkronSoccerCamp.com to register.
Additional Camp Information
Head Coach Jared Embick and his staff will hold an Akron Soccer Coaching Symposium later in the spring in conjunction with a Zips home spring game. The event will combine coaching education and seminar, as well as first hand practical application of what takes place with the Zips team in their preparation for a NCAA Division I competition.
Akron Soccer
The University of Akron men's soccer program, which owns the highest winning percentage in the nation since 2006, has developed into a perennial contender for the NCAA title since capturing the school's first team national championship in any sport in 2010. While incorporating a style of play that is attractive and attack-oriented, yet effective on bothsides of the ball, the Zips reached the NCAA final in 2009 and 2010 and have advanced to the NCAA's Round of 16 each of the last five seasons.
Additionally, developing players for the next level has become commonplace for the Akron staff as 20 Zips have gone on to play professionally either in Major League Soccer or overseas since 2006, including No. 1 overall pick Steve Zakuani in 2009, and No. 2 overall picks Darlington Nagbe in 2011 and Darren Mattocks in 2012 - just to name a few. Nagbe was part of a draft class that set MLS draft day records for most players drafted from a single school in the first round (5) and overall (8).
The latest group of Akron MLS rookies included DeAndre Yedlin, who was voted into the MLS All-Star Game this past July.
