AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron baseball team put on an offensive display in the 21-6 win over the Toronto Mets on Monday afternoon in a 12-inning exhibition game at Lee R. Jackson Field.
Toronto had their batters ready to start off the contest, as the squad would plate two runs in the top of the first. The Mets 2-0 lead wouldn't last long with the Zips pushing across two runners in the bottom of the first.
Seniors James Sheltrown and Grant Alvarez registered the first and second RBI base knocks to tie the game at two. Devan Ahart and Sheltrown scored on the respective RBI hits.
The Mets took a short-lived lead with a run in the top of the second, which was equalized with one run in the bottom of the third by the Zips.
Two scoreless frames by John Valek III and Myles McVeigh in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, went by until the Akron batters went to work.
The Zips put one run on the board in the sixth, which was followed up by consecutive five-run rallies in the seventh and eighth innings. By the final out of the eighth, Akron had a comfortable 14-5 lead over Toronto.
After two, five-run rallies, the Zips tacked on four runs in the ninth and three runs in the tenth to cap off their scoring output. The Mets would go on to add one run in the twelfth inning to give the game its final score of 21-6.
Overall, the Akron offense scattered 25 hits, six doubles and one home run. Sheltrown led the Zips with a 4-for-8 performance along with five RBI. Sophomore Anthony Bova had the second-most RBI on the team with four runs driven in.
