OXFORD, Ohio – The University of Akron baseball team was shutout by Miami, 6-0, on Saturday at McKie Field.
Freshman starter Pat Dyer (3-4) took the loss after going 2.1 innings and allowing three runs. Devan Ahart, Jared Turocy, and Darius Washington all had two hits for the Zips (17-29, 10-10 Mid-American Conference).
Mac Thoreson (6-3) took the win for Miami (24-23, 9-11), scattering eight hits over 7.1 innings. Nate Bowles and Bryce Redeker both had two hits and two RBI for the RedHawks.
Ryan Curl put Miami on the board in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly to right field. Matt Honchel scored on the play after singling his way on and moving to third on a groundout and a single. The RedHawks added a second run in the inning when Walsh scored on Bowles's single.
Honchel's RBI single down the left field line drove in Kevin Bower in the third. Redeker's two-out, two-run double in the fourth then gave the RedHawks a 5-0 lead.
Bowles doubled to left in the sixth to drive in another run for Miami. Curl scored after being hit by a pitch to start the inning and moving to second on a groundout.
The Zips left the bases full in the second when Matt Rembielak grounded out to end the threat. Washington hit a two-out single and Joey Havrilak followed with a double. After Tyler Begun walked, Thoreson got the grounder from Rembielak.
Akron had runners on second and third in the fifth after Ahart and Turocy both singled and moved up on a wild pitch. Sam Watkins then lined into the glove of Walsh at third to end the inning.
UA had the bags loaded again in the eighth, this time with one out, but MU reliever Brandon Adkins got back-to-back strikeouts to keep Akron off the scoreboard. UA left nine men on base in the game.
Akron looks to avoid being swept for the first time in MAC play in Sunday's series finale. First pitch is at 1 p.m. with Akron's Alex Loftin (3-1, 3.04) facing Miami's Charles Zubrod (2-3, 3.04) in the pitching match-up.
