Hubbard Takes Down School Record In Hammer Throw
May 04 | Track & Field
AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron's Eric Hubbard broke an eight-year school record in the hammer throw to kick off the first day of the Campbell/Wright Invitational Friday at Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex.
Hubbard, a native of Medina, Ohio, was the top collegiate finisher in the event with a historic toss of 205-04, which surpassed the Zips' previous standard of 203-10 set by Greg Corbitt during the 2004 season.
Hubbard, who was the Mid-American Conference champion in the weight throw during the indoor season, finished second overall in the event while teammate Nick Banke placed ninth with a throw of 177-09. A.G. Kruger, who represented the U.S. at the Olympic Games in 2004 and 2008, recorded the winning mark unattached with a throw of 248-03.
The Zips posted two more event wins on the day with Alex McCune taking first in the "B" section of the men's pole vault with a personal-record jump of 15-05.00 and Alexis Cooks claiming the open division title in the women's discus with a mark of 172-05. Brittany Funk took fourth place in the women's hammer throw on a toss of 177-00.
The annual Campbell/Wright Invitational will conclude Saturday. The action begins with the javelin and men's shot put at 11 a.m., at Lee Jackson Field while the running events get started at 2 p.m., with the steeplechase.
This weekend's meet serves as the final tune up for the 2012 MAC Outdoor Championships, which will be hosted by Central Michigan next weekend from May 10-12. It also represents the final home meet for eight UA seniors, including Brian Cull, Dan Garrett, Eric Hubbard, Andy Knapp, Joe McCoy, Cassie Schenck, Moses Smith and Mike Uhle.
Each athlete will be recognized Saturday for their contributions and accomplishments to the Zips' track and field program.
