AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron assistant swimming and diving coach Kristy Castillo has been named the head women's swimming and diving coach at Ball State, BSU athletics director Bill Scholl announced Monday.
"I'm honored for the opportunity to be the next head swimming and diving coach at Ball State," Castillo said. "It has been a dream of mine to be a head coach in the Mid-American Conference. I'm eager to get started and excited for what lies ahead."
"This opportunity would not have been possible without the experiences I have had at The University of Akron over the past nine years," Castillo continued. "I would especially like to thank (head swimming and diving coach) Nittaya Klim, (diving coach) Chris Medvedeff, and (Senior Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator) Mary Lu Gribschaw for all their patience, advice, and support through this process. This next step in my career would not have been possible without them."
Castillo became an assistant coach at Akron after finishing a stellar career for the Zips in 2003. A four-year letterwinner, Castillo was the team captain in her junior and senior seasons. The North Canton, Ohio native set five school records and still owns some of the fastest swims in school history in several events.
"I would like to officially congratulate Kristy on her new position at Ball State," Klim said. "She has been a quality assistant for me for the past six years, and even though it is hard to lose someone who has been such a valuable component of our program, I know this is a great opportunity for her. I am excited for her as she takes this next step in her coaching career."
