Big Marks Highlight Track's Busy Schedule

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron track and field program captured three event wins at the Ashland Alumni Open, while a number of individuals posted big marks at two other meets to highlight a busy day for the Zips.
Nick Banke recorded a personal record in the discus to lead a contingent of UA athletes at the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego. Banke went 182-00, easily surpassing his previous high of 178-09.50, to place eighth in the open.
Fellow thrower Eric Hubbard also had a big day, placing fourth in the hammer with a toss of 199-05, while Joe Wesley led the Zips' pole vault unit with a personal-best clearance of 16-09.50 and a fifth-placed finish.
At the Penn Relays, the men's 4x800 relay team of Willie Brown, Jake Hiltner, Marcus Mazzaferri and Gabriel Genovesi placed sixth with a time of 7:35.72 in the college division behind N.C.-Wilmington, which took first place with a time of 7:28.31. Also competing in Pennsylvania Saturday was Daryl Baptiste, who recorded a personal record in the triple jump with a mark of 46-02.00. He finished 16th overall in the college division.
Meanwhile, in Ashland, Kayla Whitlow finished first in the women's 800-meters (2:14.24), while Alex Bowers (18:03.37) and Andy Knapp (14:50.69) followed suit in the women's and men's 5,000-meters, respectively, in Ashland.
The Zips track and field program will next return to UA to host the annual Campbell/Wright Invitational next weekend at Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex. The two-day meet begins Friday at 3:30 p.m., and continues Saturday, starting at 11 a.m.
It will serve as the final tune-up before the 2012 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, which will be hosted by Central Michigan from May 4-5.
