Darkness Halts Day One of the MAC Match Play Event

DADE CITY, Fla. – The Akron men's golf team opened the 2012 spring slate on Monday, dropping one match and having its second match halted due to darkness at the 2012 Mid-American Conference Match Play at the Lake Jovita South Course.
The Zips entered the event as the No. 2 seed, but was defeated 4-2 by No. 7 seed Miami (Ohio) during the day's first round. Senior Ryan Mason (2 up) and freshman Miguel Meyer (3 & 1) posted wins for Akron in the morning. Junior Cameron Simmons (6 &5), senior Scott Landreth (4 & 3) and freshman Harry Whittle (3 & 2) all recorded losses.
Entering the final hole of his match, junior Tim Lew battled to the final hole, but would drop his match (1 up).
Before play during the second round was called due to darkness, Akron was able to grab a 3-2 lead over No. 6 Bowling Green with one hole left in the match. Lew led the way for the Zips during the second round, winning his first match of the day (3 & 1). Simmons (1 up) and Landreth (3 & 2) added the other two wins.
Whittle (4 & 2) and Meyer (8 & 7) were unable to post wins in their matches. Mason will return the course tomorrow morning with his match All Square with one hole to play.
Play will continue tomorrow morning with a 7:30 a.m. ET shotgun start for the completion of the second round. Round three will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
