AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's soccer team is ranked No. 1 in the nation, according to this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll.
The Zips (15-1-2, 7-0-0 Mid-American Conference), who have been ranked in the top three spots for the last month and the Top 10 all season, have won their last 12 matches and are unbeaten in their last 13. UA has now earned the nation's top ranking in three (2009, '10, '12) of the last four seasons.
Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News announced Akron as their top-ranked team Monday. Rounding out the NSCAA's Top 5 are No. 2 Maryland (14-1-2), No. 3 North Carolina (14-2-1), No. 4 Georgetown (16-2-1) and No. 5 UCLA (12-2-3). UA received 18 of 23 first-place votes.
The Zips will begin postseason play at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field this weekend as the 2012 MAC regular-season champion and No. 1 seed for the conference tournament. UA will face No. 4 seed Bowling Green Friday night in the second semifinal of the day, starting at 7:30 p.m. No. 2 Northern Illinois will play No. 3 West Virginia in the first semifinal at 4 p.m. The two winners will meet in the MAC Championship Sunday at 4:30 p.m.

Meves Named MAC Player of the Week
One day after earning National Player of the Week honors from College Soccer News, Zips' goalkeeper David Meves was named the league's player of the week Tuesday.
Meves became the NCAA's all-time shutouts leader in the team's 1-0 victory at Michigan State last Wednesday. With the 51st shutout of his career, Meves surpassed the previous record holder – Josh Ford, who notched 50 clean sheets for Wake Forest from 2007-10 – to make NCAA history.
