Michigan came from behind to defeat Niagara, 3-1, in its first-round match-up in Ann Arbor Thursday night. Despite being out-shot 16-1 in the first half, the Purple Eagles, who qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history, jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 59th minute.
But U-M's Fabio Pereira bagged a hat trick in less than seven minutes to rally the Wolverines. Two of Pereira's goals were by way of penalty kicks.
When Akron (17-1-2) takes the field Sunday, it will mark the school's 27th appearance in the NCAA postseason all-time. As a top-eight seed, the Zips earned a first-round bye and the right to host at least two NCAA Tournament games.
It is the seventh time the Zips, who will be looking to return to the College Cup for the third time in four seasons, have been seeded and the sixth consecutive year they have advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
