AKRON, Ohio – Senior Scott Caldwell, who helped lead The University of Akron men's soccer team to their ninth Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship last weekend, was named Top Drawer Soccer's National Player of the Week Monday.
Caldwell earned MAC All-Tournament Team honors after assisting all four of the Zips' goals as UA posted 2-0 victories over Bowling Green in the semifinal and Northern Illinois in the title match. The two-year team captain is a candidate for the Hermann Trophy and one of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award this season.
A native of Braintree, Mass., Caldwell leads the Zips in points (28) and assists (10) and is second on the team with a career high nine goals. He was also named to the National Team of the Week by College Soccer News Monday.
With Sunday's win, Akron extended its consecutive conference unbeaten streak to 47 games, which represents the longest such run in NCAA history. Since the start of the 2007 season, UA has gone 44-0-3 against MAC opponents, including postseason play. The Zips, who posted their 16th shutout of the season, have won their last 14 games and are unbeaten in their last 15.
The NCAA will announce its 48-team field for the 2012 championship tournament at 5:30 p.m., on NCAA.com.
Johnny J's Pub, located in Merriman Valley at 1282 Weathervane Lane, will host an official Akron Zips NCAA Selection Show Watch Party starting at 5 p.m. Fans are encouraged to come to this free event to support the Zips as the NCAA postseason picture is revealed.
