AKRON, Ohio – For the second day in a row, heavy frost delayed play as The University of Akron men's golf team concluded The Firestone Invitational in fourth place on Tuesday.
The Zips entered day two in a three-way tie for fourth before posting a round of 6-over 294 to take sole possession of fourth with a two-day score of 584 (+8). Mid-American Conference foe Ball State took home the team title with a 36-hole score of 7-under 569.
Freshman Ryan Harris earned his first collegiate top-5 finish, closing the day with a round of even-par 72. His two-round total of 142 (-2) put him in a tie for fifth place in the field of 90 golfers.
Junior Charlie Bull record his third top-15 finish in as many events this fall, closing out the day tied for 12th place (145, +1). He fired a round of 2-over 74.
Senior Cameron Simmons posted a round of 4-over 76 to finish the day tied for 30th (149, +5) while Louis Birchall's round of 2-over 74 moved him up into a tie for 41st place (150, +6).
Carr Vernon and Harry Whittle each finished tied for 57th place with identical scores of 153 +9). Vernon improved five strokes from Monday with his 74 (+2) while Whittle, playing as an individual, carded a 78 (+6).
Tim Lew, also playing as an individual, finished in 90th place with a 36-hole tally of 164 (+20).
The Zips will have a short break before heading to Bowling Green, Ky., for the Kenny Perry Invitational on Oct. 14.
