AKRON, Ohio – After becoming the school's all-time shutouts leader, University of Akron senior David Meves was named Mid-American Conference Co-Player of the Week Tuesday.
Meves broke the previous record, which had belonged to Evan Bush (2005-08), with the 49th shutout of his career in a 1-0 victory at Ohio State last Tuesday. In doing so, the native of Arlington Heights, Ill., turned in one of his best performances of the year by matching a season high with six saves, including three of the spectacular variety.
After both teams played to a scoreless first half, Meves turned away consecutive dangerous shots soon after halftime to keep the Buckeyes off the board. Then, with the Zips holding on to a narrow lead, he made a leaping stop in the 66th minute to turn OSU away again.
Meves then added to his record-setting total by posting the Zips' 12th shutout of the season at Hartwick last Saturday in a match that clinched Akron's eighth-consecutive Mid-American Conference regular season championship.
It has been an outstanding season overall for Meves, who is ranked second in the country with a goals-against-average of 0.36. As a team, the No. 2 Zips have allowed the second fewest goals in the nation (6) and are tied with North Carolina with the highest shutout percentage (.750) in Division I.
Meves shares the award with Bowling Green's Anthony Grant, who netted the game-winning goal in each of the Falcons' wins against Michigan and Florida Atlantic last week. It is the second time Meves has been named MAC Player of the Week this year after first earning the honor on Sept. 18.
Akron (13-1-2), which is unbeaten in its last 11 matches and winners of its last 10, will play its final road game of the regular season Wednesday at Michigan State. The Zips and Spartans will kick off at 3 p.m. (ET) at DeMartin Stadium.
