Blue Wins Game Three of Fall World Series, 5-3

AKRON, Ohio – The Blue team took a two games to one series lead Tuesday afternoon with a 5-3 win (six innings) over the Gold team in game three of the annual Akron baseball intrasquad fall world series at Lee R. Jackson Baseball Field. Grant Alvarez led the way for the Blue with a 3-for-3 day at the plate and three runs batted-in.
The Blue struck first in the top of the first as Anthony Bova walked to begin the game. After a strikeout by Joey Havrilak, Alvarez launched a two-run home run to left center on the first pitch.
The Gold squad answered with two runs in the bottom of the third. Devan Ahart led off with a single and advanced to second on an error. Daulton Mosbarger singled with a bunt down the first base line and Ahart moved to third. Brady Stewart drove in Ahart with an RBI ground out and Mosbarger went to second. Mosbarger then stole third and came home on a passed ball.
In the top of the fourth, the Blue added two runs, as Cale Giddings drove in Matt Rembielak with a double to the gap in left center and advanced to third on an error. Tyler Begun then plated Giddings with a single up the middle. The Gold loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half of the inning, but could not push a run across.
For the Blue in the fifth, Havrilak led off the inning with a double down the right field line and Alvarez brought him home with a single to right.
The Gold managed a run in the bottom half of the fifth as Darius Washington singled and advanced to second on an error. Billy Salem then singled, moving Washington to third, and Washington would score on a wild pitch.
In addition to Alvarez for the Blue, Derek Carmichael was 2-for-3. On the mound, John Valek III started and pitched the first three frames. He allowed two runs on five hits, while striking out three. Michael Steensen struck out four over the final three innings and allowed just one run.
Washington led the Gold offensively with three hits and a run scored. JT Brubaker started on the mound and tossed three innings, while allowing two runs on three hits. Zach Beaver pitched the other three innings and surrendered three runs to go along with three strikeouts.
Game four will take place on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. and the series wraps up on Friday with first pitch also set for 3:15 p.m.
