Blue Team Takes Game One of Fall World Series, 8-2
October 13 | Baseball
AKRON, Ohio – The Akron baseball program opened its annual intrasquad fall world series Saturday afternoon at the Lee R. Jackson Baseball Field and the Blue team utilized a seven run third inning to defeat the Gold team, 8-2, in a seven inning contest.
Following a scoreless first two innings, Blue put seven on the board in the top of the third. The Gold answered with a single run in the third and fourth innings, while the Blue tacked a final run in the seventh.
"The one thing we pointed out to the guys after the game was the importance of little things," said head coach Rick Rembielak. "This was game speed where errors count, runs count, at bats count. In the Blue team's third inning, the Gold's errors led to a lot of the runs. My point to the Gold was that it was still early and a great example (of a team coming back) was the St. Louis Cardinals last night in the playoffs where they got down early and just picked away."
The Blue squad's seven run third was highlighted by RBI singles by Matt Rembielak and Grant Alvarez, followed by a two-run double to left by Cale Giddings. The Gold came back with a run in the bottom of third as Darius Washington reached on an error and Devan Ahart scored. In the fourth, Ahart plated Samuel Trecaso with a single to left.
Alvarez and Giddings each had two RBI for the Blue as eight players each had a single hit. On the mound, starter John Valek III pitched a scoreless first and second. Michael Steensen followed in the third and fourth and allowed two runs. Joe Vazquez (2.0 IP) and Joe Cochran (1.0 IP) combined for a scoreless final three innings.
For the Gold team, Ahart went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, Trecaso went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Daulton Mosbarger went 2-for-2.
On the mound for the Gold, starter JT Brubaker struck out two and did not allow a hit over the first two innings. Nathan Allen followed for two innings and Zach Beaver pitched a scoreless fifth and sixth, while Mosbarger pitched the seventh.
"I thought our young pitchers threw well," said Rembielak. "I thought they did a good job and there was just a couple little things that we pointed out the importance of to them now that we are in games. Overall, I thought today was good. I was glad to see the guys out there today under game conditions to see how they would react and there were a lot of guys, especially some of the younger guys, that did very well here in game one."
The 2012 fall world series continues next week with games scheduled for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 3:15 p.m. each day at Lee R. Jackson Field.
