Fraizer, Hough Earn MAC Track and Field Athlete of the Week Honors
January 31 | Track & Field
AKRON, Ohio – Sophomore Brad Hough and senior Valerie Fraizer (Wert) have been named Mid-American Conference Track and Field Athletes of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Hough, who set the school record in the 3,000-meters last weekend, was named Male Track Athlete of the Week, while Fraizer, who picked up her third-straight win in the weight throw, garnered Female Field Athlete of the Week honors.
It is the first time Hough, an All-MAC First Team honoree during the cross country season last fall, has earned the distinction. Conversely, Fraizer has now won the award twice in the past three weeks.
Hough, a native of Imperial, Pa., shattered the school record by nearly 12 full seconds, crossing the line in 8:09.92, to win the event at the Mark Colligan Memorial, hosted by the University of Nebraska last Saturday. The time easily topped the previous milestone of 8:21.39, set in 2007 by David Howard, and is the fastest time in the conference.
Fraizer, an All-American in the hammer in 2010, was the easy winner in the women's weight throw with a toss of 63-01.50. The mark surpassed that of Nebraska's Victoria Zimmerman, who finished second in the event, by four full feet.
After spending the past two weekends on the road, The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams return to Stile Athletics Field House this weekend for the first leg of the annual Akron Invitational, which features some of the best collegiate and professional athletes in the country.
The combined events (heptathlon and pentathlon) will be held this Friday, starting at 5 p.m., and Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for youth (ages 3-14). UA students with valid ID will be admitted free of charge. All fans should enter through the UA student recreation center main entrance.
The remaining events of the Akron Invitational will take place on Friday, Feb. 10, and Saturday, Feb. 11.
