AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams enjoyed a strong start to the indoor campaign Friday night in the Akron Opener at Stile Athletics Field House.
The men's team swept the competition, earning wins against Eastern Michigan (89-61), Robert Morris (101-36) and Youngstown State (99-41) in dual meet scoring. The Zips women split the evening with wins against the Colonials (90-48) and Penguins (81.50-49.50) and were edged out by Cincinnati (81-64) and the Eagles (80-66).
In all, UA captured 11 first-place finishes, including nine of 14 events on the men's side, and made a run at a number of school records, including a pair of personal records from its throwers.
Senior Valerie Fraizer (Wert), an All-America Honorable Mention in the discus last summer, recorded the second-best mark in school history in the weight throw with a winning toss of 65-07.50, while senior Eric Hubbard posted the fourth-best mark on the men's side with a throw of 64-07.25. Fraizer's throw eclipsed her previous high of 64-09.75, orginally set in 2009.
Later in the evening, true freshman Iyisha Weaver hit the ground running by going 37-11.50 to win the triple jump. It was the fourth-longest leap in school history. Not to be outdone, sophomore Brad Hough posted the third-fastest mark in the 3,000m, clocking a winning time of 8:28.75.
The men's team, which swept Mid-American Conference Indoor and Outdoor Championships for the first time in 2011, dominated a number of events collectively.
All-American and school-record holder Willie Brown (1:52.18) teammed up with Gabriel Genovesi (1:52.41) to finish 1-2 in the 800-meters while Dominique Watson (6.87) and Manley Waller (6.94) did the same in the 60-meters. The Zips also took the top five spots in the long jump, led by five-time MAC champion Tyshaun Peoples (23-07.50), and went 1-3-4 in the 400-meters, paced by J'Lani Pryce's winning mark of 49.38.
Rounding out the list of winners, Dan Garrett (15-07.25) took first in the pole vault, Martell Durant (6-08.75) did the same in the high jump and the 4x400-meter relay team of Pryce, Sean Weems, Nick Owens and Brown crossed first with a time of 3:15.94.
The UA men and women will be back in action next Friday at the Kent Dual.
