Watkins Named to Academic All-MAC Team

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron's Sam Watkins has been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Baseball Team, announced by the conference office Monday. Watkins – a Johnstown, Pa. native – completed his second season in the Zips program this spring after transferring from Allegany (Md.). He is the program's seventh Academic All-MAC selection since 2008.
Watkins batted .280 during his junior season on the diamond and appeared in 40 games at shortstop, second base and designated hitter. He totaled six homers and drove in 21 runs, adding eight doubles and a slugging percentage of .462. Watkins finished 2011 on a tear, hitting four home runs and driving in 10 over the season's final seven games. He led the club with a .349 batting average during the second half of the season.
In the classroom, Watkins is a psychology major with a cumulative grade point average of 3.642.
