AKRON, Ohio - A pair of players from the University of Akron baseball program earned All-Mid-American Conference honors for their 2011 seasons, the league announced on Tuesday.
Junior outfielder Drew Turocy was named to the All-MAC First Team and junior closer Chris Bassitt was selected to the All-MAC Second Team. The teams were chosen by a vote of the MAC baseball coaches.
Turocy led Akron in nearly every offensive statistical category in 2011. The Canfield, Ohio native batted .347, drove in 29, and scored 35 runs. Turocy hit also lead the club with seven home runs, 12 doubles, and five triples. He slugged .563 and had an on-base percentage of .409.
Bassitt was dominant as Akron's closer this season, completing all seven of his save opportunities and appearing in 14 other games. Bassitt held an ERA of 1.42 and allowed just one earned run in 13 MAC appearances. Bassitt struck out 48 batters in 38.0 innings and held hitters to just a .183 batting average.
Turocy and Bassitt become the first pair of Zips to be named all-conference in the same season since Kurt Davidson (first-team) and Doug McNulty (second-team) were both selected in 2007.
