Tennis Closes MAC Play with Decisive Win at Ball State

- The University of Akron tennis team closed out the regular
season with a 6-1 victory over Mid-American Conference opponent
Ball State on Saturday at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. The Zips
(17-4, 7-1 MAC) will compete in next week's league tournament as
the No. 2 seed, matching the same place in which it finished last
season and equaling the program's best-ever seed in the conference
championship event. UA lost in the semifinal round in 2010.
Akron, which has won nine of its last 10 contests, faced little
resistance from Ball State (7-15, 1-7 MAC), which suffered its
fourth-consecutive defeat. The Zips claimed all three doubles
positions, allowing the Cardinals to score just eight total points
in the three matches, then won in straight sets in five of six
singles flights. In those five flights, BSU scored no more that
three points in any set.

In singles, Harutyunyan claimed a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 1 over
Thompson; Angelika
Jogasuria defeated Sanders 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2; Pantusart
won at No. 4, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4; Baronayte disposed of Pickrel 6-3,
6-0 at No. 5; and Natalia
Kuvakina bested Johnson 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6.
Ball State scored its point by way of a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3
via Hebble over Angelina
Jogasuria.
The MAC tournament runs April 28-May 1 in Ypsilanti, Mich., and
will be hosted by Eastern Michigan. The Zips have earned a bye into
the quarterfinal round and will take on seventh-seeded Buffalo on
