AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron swimming and diving program placed four members on the 2010-11 Academic All Mid-American Conference team, announced by the conference office Tuesday.
Senior Jayne Malloy, junior Meghan Bowling, junior Leeanna Hoover, and sophomore Courtney Fischbach were all honored by the conference for their efforts both in the classroom and in the pool. Additionally, nine Akron student-athletes were named Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention.
"We are extremely proud of the academic achievements of our swimmers and divers," said coach Nittaya Klim. "Their success and commitment level in the classroom as well as in the pool is a credit to their ability to balance both very well."
Malloy finished 10th in both diving competitions at this year's MAC Championships and recorded the victory on the 1-meter board in dual meet action against Marshall. She set a career-best during the win in the Marshall meet (279.83) and topped her career-best on the 3-meter board against Toledo when she dove a 278.10. Her 1-meter score was the best score of any Zip this season and qualified her for the Zone Diving Championships. Jayne is set to graduate this spring with a degree in moderate intervention and holds a grade point average of 3.583.
Bowling recorded a trio of season-bests at the MAC Championships; swimming times of 1:56.99 in the 200-yard freestyle, 5:09.28 in the 500-yard freestyle, and 17:43.49 in the 1650-yard freestyle. Her 1650 time was also a career-best. She also recorded a dual meet victory, taking the 1000-yard freestyle against Marshall. Bowling holds a 3.86 grade point average in her middle level education program.
Hoover, one of the Zips top divers, is also a standout in the classroom with a 3.481 grade point average as a pre-physical therapy major. On the boards, Hoover scored a career-best 305.60 to place third at the MAC Championships on the 3-meter springboard. Hoover also scored in the 1-meter competition at the conference meet, taking sixth. She was named to the All-MAC Second Team. Hoover would also set a new career mark in the 1-meter this season, diving a 277.43 against Marshall. For the season, she recorded seven zone championship-qualifying scores, and competed at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in Columbus.
Fischbach set career-bests in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.74), 100-yard butterfly (59.36), and the 100-yard freestyle (54.24) at this year's MAC Championships. She is a pre-physical therapy major with an outstanding 3.993 grade point average.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50% of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
