Tennis Shuts Out Bryant in Late-Night Match

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The University of Akron tennis team kept to its winning ways with a 7-0 victory over Bryant late Friday night at the Brown University tennis facility.
Akron (6-0) swept all three doubles contests with identical 8-1 scores, then rolled through the singles lineup with straight-set wins at all six flights to earn its first shutout of the season.
In Nos. 2-6 singles, the Zips allowed no more than three points
in any set and posted six 6-0 scores. Freshman Natalia
Kuvakina accounted for two of those shutouts, topping Katherina
Francazio 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6. At the No. 1 position, junior Zara
Harutyunyan won 6-1 in the opening set and 7-5 in the second
versus Claudia Hidalgo, the only Bryant (4-4) player to
threaten.
"It was an extremely long day for us, leaving campus at 5 a.m., and
playing a match in Providence, R.I., at 8:30 p.m.," first-year
Akron head coach Brandon
Padgett said. "But, I am proud of how the team handled the
travel issues, managing to come out and play solid tennis from
start to finish."
Akron faces a tight turnaround, staying in Providence to face
off against 53rd-ranked Brown on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET. The Zips
will be in Boston, Mass., on Sunday for a 10 a.m. contest with
67th-ranked Boston University.
"We now have to find a way to physically and mentally get ready in
less than twelve hours for a very tough Brown University team, that
is nationally ranked," Padgett said. "The team is loose and having
fun, and that is when we are at our best, so if it can be done,
this team can do it."
