Akron Remains in Fifth After Day Two of MAC Championships

ATHENS, Ohio - The University of Akron swimming and diving team remains in fifth place after day two of the 2011 Mid-American Conference Championships at the Ohio University Aquatic Center. The Zips currently have 146.5 points. Ohio leads the competition with 271 points.
Akron had five divers score in the 1-meter springboard. Senior Amanda Angeloff led the way in fifth with a career-best score of 272.65. Leeanna Hoover finished seventh, Carla McNamara took eighth and Jayne Malloy tied for ninth. Amy Dorow rounded out the Akron scorers with a 14th place showing.
Sophomore Katie Miles lowered her career-best by six one-hundredths of a second in the 50-yard freestyle to finish seventh in 23.20.
Catherine Carr finished tenth in the 200-yard individual medley and became the second faster swimmer in the event in Akron history, touching home in 2:03.97. The freshman was just under a half-second off the school record set by Kendall Karchner at last year's MAC Meet.
Rebecca Zimmer finished 14th in the 500-yard freestyle, lowering her season-best - set in the morning prelims - by a few fractions of second. Zimmer swam a 4:56.30 in Thursday's finals.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Miles, Kendra Colby, Rafia Darwish, and Meg Finnerty finished eighth in 1:35.16. The swim was the third-fastest time in UA history.
The 2011 MAC Championships continue tomorrow with preliminaries at 11:00 a.m. and finals at 7:00 p.m. in Athens. Tomorrow's events include the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, 400-yard medley relay and 3-meter diving.
