Tennis Doubles Team Makes Jump in ITA Rankings
February 18 | Women's Tennis
AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron tennis team's doubles pair of junior Zara Harutyunyan and sophomore Angelina Jogasuria are ranked 18th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, which was released earlier this week. The Zips duo moved up from 26th in the previous ranking period on Jan. 4 - when they became the first doubles team in program history to be ranked.
Harutyunyan and Jogasuria are also listed eighth in the Midwest region and are the only Mid-American Conference doubles team to be recognized in either poll. Harutyunyan, who received UA's highest-ever individual singles ranking of 73rd nationally in the ITA's preseason poll in September, is ranked 18th in the Midwest region in singles as well.
The next batch of individual rankings will be announced on March 1.
Akron improved to 3-0 in dual-match play with a 4-3 victory over Louisville on Feb. 4 and hits the road this weekend to take on Cincinnati on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET and Xavier a day later at 10 a.m. UA scored a 7-0 home win over Cincinnati in March 2010, snapping a five-match losing streak to the Bearcats, and topped Xavier 6-1 at home last January.
Cincinnati enters the weekend with a 1-6 record, but plays host to MAC opponent Toledo on Friday and Dayton on Saturday morning, before facing the Zips on Saturday night. Xavier owns a 3-2 record and will match up with Toledo on Saturday before meeting UA on Sunday.
Akron, which has wins over Big Ten foes Penn State and Michigan State thus far this season, are on the road next weekend as well, competing at Bryant, Brown and Boston on Friday, Saturday and Sunday respectively. The Zips play host to their first home contests of the season on Sunday, March 6 when they take on Northeast Ohio rivals Cleveland State at 10 a.m. and Youngstown State at 2 p.m.
