Alex Abreu Breaks Freshman Assists Record
February 17 | Men's Basketball
In the University of Akron men's basketball 89-54 victory over Bowling Green on Feb. 15, freshman guard Alex Abreu broke the season assists record for an Akron freshman.
Abreu, a native of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, recorded his 91st assists of the season on a jumper by senior forward Brett McKnight at the 12:05 mark of the first half. He passed Russell Brown (90, 1983-84) and Pete Carillo (90, 1979-80) for the top freshman mark.
Through 26 games, Abreu has 95 assists and is five shy of becoming the 17th player in school history to record 100 assists in a season (25 total 100-assist performances). As of Feb. 17, he is eighth in the Mid-American Conference in assists per game (3.65) and is the only freshman in the top-15. He is also seventh in the MAC with a 1.58 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Abreu made his first collegiate start against Detroit on Dec. 1, recording eight points and four dimes. In addition to breaking the freshman assists record, he is one of just nine players to make his first collegiate start in the Zips' first five games under seventh year head coach Keith Dambrot.
For the year, he is averaging 6.5 points, 3.7 assists and 1.4 steals per game. He has at least one assist in 24 of 26 games and at least three assists in 19 of 26 games, including a career-high eight dimes in his first collegiate game against Millikin (Nov. 12).
Abreu and the Zips return to action on Saturday, Feb. 19, when they play host to the Creighton Bluejays (17-11, 9-7 MVC) in an ESPNU BracketBusters contest. Tip-off from Rhodes Arena is set for 7 p.m. ET.
