Akron's Luke Holmes Invited to 2012 Major League Soccer Combine
December 07 | Men's Soccer
AKRON, Ohio – Luke Holmes, a senior on The University of Akron men's soccer team, has been invited to the 2012 adidas Major League Soccer Player Combine, which will be held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., from January 6-10.
Holmes is one of 52 college seniors from 31 Division I schools to receive the exclusive invitation. The combine will be held at Central Broward Regional Park and will conclude two days prior to the start of the 2012 MLS SuperDraft.
Coaches and technical staffs from all 19 MLS clubs, including 2012 expansion side Montreal Impact, will be in attendance to scout the top talent at the 17th annual player combine.
Holmes, the 2010 NAIA National Player of the Year, played his final season as a collegian at UA after spending his first three years at Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio. The native of Oldham, England, made an instant impact for the Zips – scoring five goals and assisting eight others in just 16 matches.
Holmes, who netted game winners at Buffalo and Florida Atlantic, was named to the All-Mid-American Conference First Team after helping guide the Zips to their seventh consecutive MAC regular-season championship and a trip to the NCAA's Round of 16.
For the eighth consecutive year, the MLS SuperDraft will be held in conjunction with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Convention, and take place on January 12, at the Kansas City Convention Center. The first round of the SuperDraft will be broadcast live on ESPN2 beginning at 11:00 AM CT/12:00 noon ET.
This year, the MLS SuperDraft will include two rounds and 38 overall selections, with the Montreal Impact selecting first overall.
The next eight selections are from teams that did not qualify for the 2011 MLS Cup Playoffs beginning with the team with fewest 2011 regular season points (3 points per win, one point per tie). The remaining eight positions are ranked by fewest regular season points among the teams that were eliminated in the same round of the MLS Cup Playoffs.
A four-round Supplemental Draft will take place via conference call on Tuesday, January 17, 2012.
