Men's Basketball Cruises Past Detroit, 81-63

AKRON, Ohio – Nikola Cvetinovic led all players with 16 points and had six rebounds to help Akron to an 81-63 victory over Detroit in a non-conference men's basketball game on Saturday at Rhodes Arena.
Cvetinovic was 6-of-8 from the field, including going 1-of-1 from behind the arc, to be one of four Akron players to finish with double-figure points. Nick Harney had 15 points while Brett McClanahan and Zeke Marshall had 12 and 11 points respectively.
Marshall became the school's all-time leader in the blocked shots category, passing Romeo Travis' mark of 165 blocks. Marshall had two swats on the night and now has 167 for his career.
For the game, Akron (3-2) shot 54.2 percent from the field (32-of-59) and 50.0 percent from 3-point range (8-of-16). Detroit (3-4) closed out the game shooting 42.6 percent from the floor (23-of-54) and 33.3 percent from behind the arc (4-of-12).
The Titans' Chase Simon led all scorers with 27 points.
The Zips pushed their lead to 15 points (53-38) with 16:37 to go in the game before Detroit began to chip away at the advantage. However, Harney, who finished with 15 points, would go on to score eight-straight points for Akron to push the lead back to 12 points (61-49) at the 12:20 mark.
After falling behind by 17 points (66-49) with 10:40 to go in the game, the Titans began to close the gap on the Zips. A short 10-2 run by Detroit cut the Akron lead to nine (68-59) with 4:45 on the second-half clock, but a Brian Walsh 3-pointer from the wing pushed the Akron advantage back to 12 (71-59) at the 4:33 mark.
Detroit opened up an early 9-2 lead at the 16:15 mark before Akron used a 14-2 run over the next 3:28 to open up a 16-11 lead with 12:28 to go in the half. After the Titans cut the Zips lead to one (18-17) with 9:26 on the clock, Akron began to open up the offense.
From there, Akron would control the half, using an 8-0 run to close out the half with a 43-32 lead. Harney led the Zips with seven points while Cvetinovic, McClanahan and Quincy Diggs had six points each.
For the half, Akron shot 55.2 percent from the floor (16-of-29) and was 5-of-9 from long range (55.6 percent). Detroit finished the half shooting 44.4 percent (12-of-27) and 16.7 percent from behind the arc (1-of-6).
The Zips hit the road for a three-game road trip beginning on Monday, Nov. 28, when they travel to Morgantown, W.Va., to take on West Virginia. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
