AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's soccer team will continue its national championship defense at Charlotte next Sunday, Nov. 27, in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Zips (15-3-4) and the 49ers (15-4-2) will kick off at 7 p.m. (ET) at Transamerica Field. Live stats and a free video stream of Sunday's game at Charlotte will be available on-line.
Behind a pair of goals from sophomore striker Darren Mattocks, UA earned a 3-2 victory at sixth-seeded SMU Sunday night to advance to the Round of 16 while Charlotte posted a 3-1 win at 11th-seeded UAB on its side of the bracket.
For his efforts, Mattocks, who scored three goals in two NCAA Tournament games last week for the Zips, was named to National Teams of the Week by College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer Monday. The Jamaican enters the week tied for third place on the school's single-season scoring list with 21 goals in 21 matches.
Mattocks is currently second in the nation in total goals, trailing just Ashton Bennett (22 goals) of Coastal Carolina, which saw its season come to an end Sunday in a 3-2 defeat at North Carolina.
